NK is an abbreviated version of ink and the name of an avatar I use exclusively in my Instagram stories. For me, ink represents malleability. Before I got sick, I was one track-minded in terms of storytelling: I was a writer by trade and that meant putting words on paper and stringing together a narrative. When that infrastructure was compromised, I had to rediscover my voice.
The reality of my situation (unemployed, Bipolar, recovering) made it hard to feel authentic as a person and a writer. Blocked, I created an avatar to stand in for me that I use as a communication vessel. NK represents multiple forms of storytelling unified by a common goal: recovery and mental health.
